Students
in today's
classrooms have to endure a lot of testing! This is an unfortunate
reality but standardized testing is an important measure of the success
of our students as well as our school. We take our responsibility to
best prepare our students for these tests very seriously and hope that
this website informs and empowers you to help support us in ensuring
the success of your child.
Preparing
for Testing
Our teachers work hard to ensure our students' success but there's a
few things you can do to help your child be successful, too!
- Talk
with them about any anxieties they may be experiencing
- Take a
look at the resources on our website to help them with the Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies,
and Computer Skills
Tests
- Don't schedule any
doctor or dentist appointments for the morning of the test
- Make
sure they do not miss school on any testing days
- Make
sure they get a good night's sleep
- Provide them with a
healthy breakfast
- Make sure that they
arrive at school on time
- Smile
and give encouragement!
State Tests
State tests are mandated by the state goverment because the results of
those tests are used to determine if our school meets the requirements
set forth by North Carolina's ABCs of Education program.
State tests are also mandated by the federal goverment because the
results of those tests are also used to determine if our school has met
the requirements set forth by the
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2002. Please take a look at the Rogers-Herr Report Card
to see how we measure up! Please
visit the following links on the NC Department of Public Instruction
(DPI) website to learn more about each state test that our students
take:

Benchmark
Tests
In order to gauge our progress and prepare students for statewide
testing, our benchmarks are based on the NC Standard Course of Study (SCOS)
and are created by DPS teachers for DPS students. We administer
benchmark tests for reading,
writing, math, science, and social studies.
Each benchmark test is designed to test what has been taught in the
classroom up to the date of testing. Assessing students throughout the
year helps promote student success by providing teachers with essential
feedback on every student in his or her classroom. The data we get from
benchmark test results enables teachers to prepare lessons and
remediation that address the specific needs of each student they teach.
This "fine tuning" approach is one of the many things that helps us
ensure the success of all Rogers-Herr students. Parents and guardians
can also utilize these test results to identify their child's strengths
and weaknesses so that they can provide encouragement at home. The
Individual Student Report of your child's results will be sent home
several days after the results of the benchmarks are delivered to the
school. You can learn more about each of our benchmarks by clicking on
any of the links below: Testing
Dates Please note often
testing dates are changed due to circumstances beyond our control.
